A remarkable festival Mass
On 11 May 2026, exactly 200 years since the then Bishop of London, William Hawley, dedicated St Mary's to the Glory of God, there was a remarkable Mass of Thanksgiving at the church. The Rt Revd Dr Anderson Jeremiah, the Bishop of Edmonton, presided over the proceedings and preached on the importance of a church that welcomes everyone. Afterwards, there was food and drink aplenty. Thank you to everyone who brought a dish to share, and particularly to Food for All who were so

It's our birthday – and it's a big one!
On 11 May 2026, it will be exactly 200 years since the then Bishop of London, William Howell, consecrated St Mary's Church, Somers Town. Built as a chapel of ease for the new St Pancras Church, St Mary's was designed by William Inwood and his son Henry. It cost £13,629 to build and was designed to hold 1,500 people in response to a lack of city churches to meet the rapidly expanding urban population. The whole process should take around six weeks, and the clock face will be back in position before the s

It's PAYE day for St Mary's
The team from Historic England, members of the PCC of St Mary's and architect Alex Veal. Last August, St Mary’s received an unprecedented £639,064 from the Heritage at Risk Capital Fund, led by Historic England and funded by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport. The fund prioritises heritage sites serving disadvantaged communities. Few churches can match St Mary’s social history. Known as the ‘Cabbies’ Church after standing shoulder to shoulder with striking hackney cab

Works start on the holding repairs
This week saw the start of emergency works to St Mary's to keep the rain out this winter and to prepare the tower for Phase 1 works. The Friends raised over £6,000 in September and October to pay for 200 roof slates to replace those that have slipped, or are missing or damaged. Work over the first week has fixed some of the worst patches on the roof, with buckets being removed from the north west corner for the first time in months. The team is coming back in two weeks to mak
