Save 200 years
of heritage
and hope
St Mary’s on Eversholt Street in the London Borough of Camden is a Grade II listed church which requires urgent repairs so it can continue to serve the local community. St Mary’s has been at the heart of Somers Town for 200 years, providing a place of worship and developing deep connections with people locally to offer much-needed community space and a place of sanctuary for those in need.

Target Amount: £300,000
Together with the PCC of St Mary's we've currently raised over £225,000 and are 75% of the way there! We're looking to raise the rest between now and the end of June 2026 to fund the most urgent works needed and begin preparing for Phase 2

The poor condition of the Gothic-style building has meant St Mary’s has faced threats of closure and even demolition. This funding will address the most immediate work needed to the West Front, which is already under protective scaffolding. This will cover repairs to failing masonry, brickwork and joinery as well as repointing, cleaning and improved drainage. This vital work will enable the church to develop further phases of restoration to ultimately bring the whole building back to its former glory for the benefit of the community.
With the exciting announcement from Historic England on 7 August 2025 that St Mary’s had received a grant for £639,064 (BBC, Diocese of London, Church Times), the church is now looking to fundraise an additional £300,000 to fund the remaining works needed to complete Phase 1 of a 3 Phase project.
Phase 1 Projects

Complete! Holding Repairs and Roof Slates
We've now repointed the tower pinnacles, refixed or replaced roof and gutter flashings, net at-risk stonework, and replaced slipped, missing or damaged roof slates.

(Cleaning in Progress) Masonry Repairs
On the West Front, we are going to clean and repoint the masonry up to the bottom of the bell tower window. Some bricks will need to be replaced. They are going to look very white!

(Acquiring Stone) Stone Pinnacles
All four stone pinnacles along the front are in poor condition and will need replacing. The new pinnacles will be made from the same Bath stone as the originals.

(Cleaning in Progress)
Vestibule Parapets
We need to take down and rebuild the parapets above the north and south vestibules as these walls are fractured and could be unstable.

(Acquiring Stone) Buttress Offset Stone
Each buttress has offset stones at two levels that protect the masonry. We will be replacing the buttress offset stones and repointing the joints.

Scaffolding Removal & Hoarding
Once the work is finished, we will remove the scaffolding on Eversholt Street. On Aldenham Street, there will be a high wood hoarding instead of scaffolding.
Complete! Milestone 1 : £30,000
(Target Date - End of November 2025)
Donate a Slate
St Mary's raised over £7,000 for the replacing of 200 missing and damaged slates, primarily funded by congregants and local residents
Emergency Works
Additional funding was raised and the holding repairs were completed at the beginning of December 2025 allowing the next part of the project to move forward
Complete! Milestone 2 : £125,000
(Target Date - End of January 2026)
Fund a Finial
It takes nearly £25,000 to pay
for the manufacturing and
replacement of a pinnacle and
finial. We would love to get at
least two of these funded by a
collection of donations and
welcome donations of all sizes!
Ground Floor Masonry
Masonry work will begin at the start of the year beginning with ground floor works. This will include a mix of cleaning, repairs, and repointing. Initial works have begun so keep an eye out to see some works in progress
Current Total Raised with PCC of St Mary's
(As of 14 February 2026) :
£229,874.23
Milestone 3 : £300,000
(Target Date - End of June 2026)
Tower Works
With the scaffolding now up, some additional works to the tower have been identified and would be worthwhile to complete during Phase 1. Additionally, some internal works to the tower including work on the clock, masonry and cleaning to the inside of the tower, and repairs to the ceiling can be done now to save future costs that would need to be included in Phase 2 otherwise.
Preparation for Phase 2
With Phase 1 nearly funded and in progress, work is now being done to begin planning for Phase 2 with additional works expected to begin in 2028. Over the next year, St Mary's will experience a variety of costs including getting a multi-million pound application in, conducting a variety of needed building and works surveys, and expand community engagement and use of the internal space.
